1948 Picton Gold Cup Regatta

Canadian Breaks Gold Cup Record

Wilson's Miss Canada III is Timed at 119.009 mph Over Regatta Course at Picton

Picton, Ont., August 2, [1948] (Canadian Press) -- World and Canadian records were set today at the sixth annual Picton Gold Cup Regatta. Roaring over a sanctioned mile course, Harold Wilson of Ingersoll, Ont., smashed the existing Gold cup mark held by Guy Lombardo by nearly two miles an hour.

Wilson, driving his Miss Canada III, Canadian entry in the forthcoming Detroit Gold Cup races, shot over the course at dawn at 119.009 mph. It was the first Gold Cup record established on Canadian water.

Sagana VIII, driven by Mrs. Mildred Foulke of Essex, Md., shattered its own world record for Class D runabouts at a speed of 62.828 mph. It was the twenty-seventh world record in C and d classes for Frank Foulke and his wife. Mrs. Foulke holds eight of them.

A Canadian competitive course record for Denesen 225 hydroplanes was established and again broken. Mr. Dockit, driven by Dr. Walter Robinson, Alexandria Bay, N.Y., ripped over the course at 67.289 to better the Jackie (Pops) Cooper mark of 66.02 set two years ago. Later in the race Sid Street, Kansas City Mo., cracked the Robinson mark at a speed of 68.053 mph.

Street also captured the Prince Edward gold trophy with two firsts and a second. Belligero, driven by Paul Sawyer, San Antonio, Tex., was second with John Bogie's Blitz II, of Loon Lake, N.Y., third.

Belligero won the 225 division II class with a second and first.
