The course for the 1951 Steel Cup was unique in that it resembled a clover leaf. The site of the race was at the confluence of three rivers - the Allegheny, the Monongahela and the Ohio. The course started up the Allegheny, twisted around a hair pin curve to run past the mouth of the Monongahela and then down the Ohio before turning back to the judge's stand. Needless to say such a twisting course did not make for high speeds.
