Fageol Pilots Racer To Hydroplane Victory
BUFFALO, N.Y. Aug, 15 (AP). —Ray Fageol of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, raced his So Long to the national championship for seven-liter hydroplanes on the Niagara River today.
Fageol won two five mile heats in the Buffalo Launch Club’s Al Endres Memorial speedboat regatta.
An estimated 75,000 spectators saw Fageol set a new course record in the first heat with a time of 4:03.5 at an average speed of 73.92 m.p.h. He finished the second heat in 4:04.2 at 73.71 m. p. h.
Bob Willis of Long Beach, Calif., won the Class E racing runabouts national championship in Roughneck. Willis finished second in the first heat and first in the second for a total score of 700.
Run Musson of Akron, Ohio, swimmed his Chro-Mate over a 10-mile course to win the unlimited hydros event in 7:09.5 at an average speed of 75.44 m.p.h., setting a new course record.
Ed Brown of Sacramento, Calif., won the first heat in the Class E event with his Bouncy Barby in 4:44.6 at 63.247 m.p.h. for a new course record. He finished fourth in the second heat to place third in the final standings with a score of 400.
