In the 1946 and 1948 Gold Cups it was necessary to split the field into sections since it was recognized that no more than 12 boats could safely start. In the 1954 Silver Cup it was determined that it was unsafe to start any more than 9 boats at one time. However the Detroit River Racing Association decided to start 10 boats in the Ford Memorial. As a result of this or a wild little My Sweetie, three boats came to grief. Consequently in the Silver Cup it was decided that no more than six boats could start at one time.

The 1955 Silver Cup was really the first race in the modern format that would be current for more than 30 years after 1955. Basically the plan was to run both preliminary heats in sections. Previously the first heat would be run in sections with the second and third heats being limited to the top 12 boats.
