Day Two of qualifying

Detroit, MI, Friday, July 10, 1998, 5:20 p.m. - - The big news of the day from the historic APBA Gold Cup developed when Driver Mark Tate was spotted sitting in the cockpit of the U-100 PICO American Dream '98. Tate was getting a run through of the cockpit's controls by U-100 driver Mark Evans. Tate was left without a boat after U-10 team owner Steve Woomer's passing away in April. Before long, it was being announced that Tate would be taking the U-100 out for a spin during afternoon qualifying. As he rounded the first turn, PA announcers introduced him as 'Detroit's Own' and announced that if he was comfortable with the hull, he would be racing over the weekend. By day's end his boat was officially registered as U-101 PICO American Dream '98, the team's second hull. Apparently there were rumors of this possibility yesterday but first Mark Tate's drivers suit and helmet had to be sent overnight from Seattle, Washington. Tate had presented them to Steve Woomer's son Kenny the week of his father's funeral.

However when the smoke had cleared the main story still remained Dave Villwock's going for his third straight Gold Cup win..

After a great morning of qualifying, two boat teams would have rather their boats stayed on their trailers after their earlier runs. Nate Brown, after already qualifying with a speed of 156.352 in the U-8 Llumar Window Film broke a prop and will be working all night to repair the bottom of the hull. Also during afternoon qualifying, U-14 Northwest Unlimited driven by Ken Muscatel sheared the main motor shaft and are having trouble finding one that matches up.

Pit Notes:

Steve Weber is just fine after his adventure on the Detroit River Sunday afternoon.... the escape hatch under the boat was damaged during the Championship Final and Steve received a blast of water straight into his face on the 3rd lap of the competition. The blast was strong enough to blow the visor off of his helmet.

Heat 2A provided unquestionably the most excitement of the day on Saturday, not only for the fans but for the race teams as well. The U-100 PICO American Dream '96 driven by Mark Evans started the race five to six boat lengths ahead of the Budweiser. Obviously the start would have given PICO a chance to win but the whole scenario ended with both the PICO and Budweiser boats receiving a one lap penalty for jumping the gun. The heat was therefore won Steve David in the U-2 Miss Chrysler Jeep. Both Evans and Villwock were upset, Evans saying that Villwock cut him off going up the backstretch at the start of the race . . . And Villwock talking with officials a full hour after the heat claiming he did not jump the start. Villwock and race officials viewed a tape to confirm he did start early.

The addition of Mark Tate to the PICO team has forced PICO Corporate to make a slight change to their corporate moto . . instead of The Mark of Excellence . . . It now reads on the side of the race truck The Mark's of Excellence for Mark Tate and Mark Evans.

U-2 Miss Chrysler Jeep ran a test run of 159 mph Sunday morning, leaving everyone to wonder where the extra speed came from. Answer: The team flew in a new prop purchased from the old Steve Woomer shop . . it arrived via overnight shipping at 8a.m. and gave the boat more speed instantly.
