RACE NOTES
FRIDAY: Jimmy Shane in the U-1 Miss HomeStreet topped the Gold Cup qualifying ladder with a 159.906 MPH lap average of two consecutive laps, with rookie Andrew Tate's U-9 Delta/Realtrac close behind at 157.912 MPH. J. Michael Kelly in the U-5 Graham Trucking followed in third place with a 157.612 MPH average and all boats qualified Friday except for the U-57 driven by rookie Corey Peabody, earning his qualifying spot in Saturday practice.
SATURDAY:
HEAT 1A Jimmy Shane and J. Michael Kelly put on one of the best races so far in 2016 with a deck to deck duel for four laps, with Shane coming out the winner. Kevin Eacret blew up a turbine engine, effectively ending his participation for the weekend.
HEAT 1B Andrew Tate started off in his hometown by grabbing the win over Brian Perkins, with Jeff Bernard in third place and Corey Peabody scoring points in his first Unlimited heat.
HEAT 2A Jimmy Shane battled a very fast Jeff Bernard for three laps before pulling away to the win. Corey Peabody scored the second points finish of his new Unlimited career with a well-driven third place as stormy weather closed in, forcing Heat 2B to be rescheduled to Sunday morning.
SUNDAY:
HEAT 2B saw Andrew Tate snag the win from Lane 1. Brian Perkins came in second place after J. Michael Kelly ran through Tate's roostertail in turn 2 of the first lap, allowing Perkins to pass.
HEAT 3A JMK got back his winning ways after Andrew Tate in the U-9 jumped the gun, earning a 1 minute penalty. Tom Thompson in the U-11 Peters & May grabbed second and Brian Perkins in the U-21 Al Deeby Dodge was third.
HEAT 3B Jimmy Shane racked up another 400 points with another win over Jeff Bernard's U-7 Graham Trucking.
HEAT 4A saw Andrew Tate win his third heat of the weekend over Brian Perkins, Corey Peabody and Jeff Bernard, who earned a one minute penalty for failing to maintain 80 MPH prior to the start,
HEAT 4B Jimmy Shane kept his perfect weekend going with another win over J. Michael Kelly and Tom Thompson.
In the FINAL HEAT, Andrew Tate was penalized a lap for hitting and dislodging a buoy while trying to gain lane 1 behind Jeff Bernard during the scoreup.At the start, Kelly was in Lane 1, Shane in Lane 2, Bernard in Lane 3, Perkins in Lane 4, Tate in Lane 5 and Tom Thompson was the trailer. Shane stuck with Kelly for two laps, but when Kelly came unhooked in Turn 2 on the second lap, he forced Shane far outside, and ran away from Shane for the remainder of the race, giving Kelly his first Gold Cup victory. Shane finished 2nd, Bernard 3rd, Perkins 4th, Thompson 5th and Tate 6th.
