(This first contest for the British International Trophy or Harmsworth Cup as it was nicknamed at the time was necessitated by a challenge from Germany. The German boat burned and the event was contested by the British three boat team.)
The 40 foot and under standard was first established under the Harmsworth rules.
The first Harmsworth Trophy was not run on a closed course, but instead up a river.
The Harmsworth Trophy was a one heat race until 1911 with appropriate elimination heats.
