( This was Gar Wood’s last race, although he ran the Miss America X in a mile trial in 1935. After setting a world mile straightaway record in 1939, it was anticipated that Sir Malcolm Campbell would challenge for the Harmsworth Trophy in 1940. However due to World War II, no one in England was in a position to challenge in 1940.)
