After the Americans vIsited Italy in 1933, the Italians came to America in 1934 and defeated some of our best boats with their 12-litre supercharged hydroplane Lia V. This led to the opening of the gold class to 12 litre craft in 1935 and to superchargers in 1936. This facilitated the entry of foreign boats in the 1937 and 1938 Gold Cups.
