1946 Webb Trophy
Al Brinkman of Buffalo Takes Keokuk Feature
Keokuk. — (UP) — Al Brinkman, Buffalo. N. Y. won the Webb trophy in the feature event of the power boat races held at Lake Keokuk here Thursday.
Brinkman was the only starter to finish the 20-mile race, when the other boats developed engine trouble and dropped out along the way.
Jack "Pop” Cooper, Kansas City, Mo., holder of the trophy since 1941, was unable to defend his title when his boat broke down before the feature and he was forced to withdraw.
In an earlier race, a boat piloted by Ed Candy, Terre Haute. Ill., struck an object in the water 100 yards from the finish line. Candy was uninjured and managed to bring his craft across to win the race before it sank. His boat was fished out of the lake by a U. S. coast guard cutter.
