Record Broken In Boat Race
Middle River, Md. — (AP) — A new one-mile world’s record for Class C racing runubouts was claimed alter yesterday’s 111th annual Power Boat Regatta on Middle River.
Edmund Thompson ot Dundalk, Md„ pushed his T. M. Special across the mile course at 53.255 miles per hour. Present holder of the Class C mark is Mrs. Mildred Foulke of Essex, Md„ with a 52.555 mph set last September.
Al Bauer, American Power Boat Association referee, said he would file claim for the new mark.
Thompson's boat Is powered by the same motor which Mrs. Foulke used to set the record last fall. He bought it from the Foulkes last winter.
Band Leader Guy Lombardo called off a third attempt at the U. S. one-mile speed record in his Gold Cup challenger, Tempo VI. Poor visibility was the reason.
He brought his 25-foot, 1,250 horsepower craft here with the announced intention of making another try at the 15-year-old record of 124.915 miles per hour set by Gar Wood.
However, he did enter and win easily the featured 15-mile free-for-all event. He averaged 55.18 miles per hour with his Tempo VI at half throttle to cop the Glenn L. Martin trophy.
The highest official speed recorded in the regatta was made by Joe Palmer of Arlington, Va. He averaged 56.729 to win the special five-mile free-for-all.
