National Sweepstakes Heat To Sarant as Cantrell Fouls

RED BANK, N.J.. Aug. 13 (INS) — George Sarant, Freeport. N. Y, today drove Etta to a first heat victory In the featured National Sweepstakes run of the two-day regatta on the north Shrewsbury River.

“Wild Bill" Cantrell, Detroit, driving Horace Dodge's Gold Cup champion My Sweetie, jumped the gun — but came close to winning although he was penalized another two and a half mile lap. Averaging better than 80 MPH to the winner's $9,682. My Sweetie was only a couple hundred yards off when the gun signalled Etta the victor. Harry Lynn’s La-Ha-La also ran an extra lap for beating the gun by a boat length.

Sid Street, Kansas City. Mo., also turned In a piece of driving work. Whizzing his Z-Z-Zip to victory in the 225-cubic inch hydroplane event. Street gunned his boat at a 75.123 MPH clip. The accepted world's speed record is 74.751. Two weeks ago in Canada, Street set a 75.7 mark which has not yet been recognized.

Final heat of the Sweepstakes will be run tomorrow.

Guy Lombardo's Tempo VI did not finish. The rudder on the maestro's boat broke midway In the race.
