Motor Boat Regatta Set Next Sunday
Street, Sawyer Entered In 4th Annual Meet
The fourth annual regatta of the Falls Cities Motor Boat Racing Association is just a week away. It is scheduled next Sunday on the Ohio River at Spring Park, one mile east of Jeffersonville.
The racing will get under way at 12 noon and will continue until approximately 4:40 p.m. Heats will be run every 20 minutes.
Top race on the program is the famous Calvert Marine Derby Trophy race, won last year by Bill Cantrell in Horace Dodge’s "My Sweetie.” Cantrell hasn’t announced definitely whether he will compete this year but several other top-flight drivers have promised to be present.
Paul Sawyer of South Harwick, Mass., will compete with his national championship winner Bellegerio II and Alter Ego. Sid Street, who swept his three race classes here last year, will bring two of his boats, Gee-Whizz and the Whizz. Street drove his “Z-Z-Zip” more than 100 m.p.h. in the stretch last week at Cincinnati to set a new world record.of 81.78 for the closed oval.
Also slated are three five-mile heats in each of the 135, and 225 cubic inch division I and II, The Calvert chase is over a 10-mile course. Twenty-two trophies and cash prizes will be awarded the winners.
