New York Pilot Wins Gold Cup Feature at Cambridge Regatta

Cambridge, Md.. Aug. 12.— Joe Van Blerck’s 7-liter racer Aljo of Freeport, N. Y.. today won all three heats of the Cambridge Gold Cup event, feature race of the first day of the Cambridge Yacht Club regatta.

With two seconds to his credit, Owen Cummings of Dundalk. Md., driving Ernie Chase’s Pep VI of Baltimore, earned runner-up honors over a choppy course on Choptank River. A poor third was Danny Murphy’s Dee Jay of Philadelphia, steered by Norman Lauterbach.

Speed Mark Set

Edison Hedges, the Atlantic City (N, J.) record breaker, sets another speedboat mark when he took his Red Eagle over the five-mile circuit in 51.107 miles per hour. This eclipsed the former world mark of 47.83 made last month at Bush River. Md.. by Tom Ehrhardt of York, Pa.

Aubrey Thacker of Washington, world record holder in the D service runabouts, won both heats for his class. His fastest speed of 43.753 in the first heat was nearly four miles short of his record, however.

More Races Today

Double wins were recorded by Rodney Brogden of Newport News, Va.. C service runabouts, and Joseph Mascari, Floral Park, N. Y.. F service runabouts.

Racing continues tomorrow with trophy presentation late in the day.
