1950 Oakland County Boat Club Regatta
Speed and Spray
Oakland County Boat Club's Regatta on Sylvan Lake, near Pontiac, Mich., in September drew a fine field of boats and many thousands of spectators.
With 14 starters, the 135 class was the largest. Driven by Bob Lueckenhoff, Tommy Gore's Miami Boy of Detroit, took a commanding lead in both heats and walked away with first place. Pushing very close was Bill Hickson's Agitator from Pontiac, second in both heats, and Dick Rankin of Pontiac in Hi-Ball, third in both.
Paul Sawyer, Jr. of South Harwich, Mass. ran away in Alter Ego in both heats of 225-II, followed by Chuck Hunter of Columbus, O. in Miss Columbus for second place and Don Campbell of Cincinnati in Miss Delhi Hills for third.
In 225-II, in which there were 11 starters, young Bill Muncey of Detroit with Mi Son turned out the winner, when Paul Sawyer won the first heat with Belligero but was disqualified in the second for jumping the gun. Gary Hooker of Grosse Point, Mich. took second with Gary Hooker, while Sawyer got third place. Lou Butler's Barracuda of Zanesville, O. collided with Art Hickson's Hot Stuff III in the first heat. Hot Stuff sank and was recovered later in the day and Barracuda was forced out of the race for good.
