Cooper Sends Hornet Over Fastest Heat
Boat Also Wins Cup After Others Retire
Madison, Ind., Oct. 14 (AP) — Hornet, owned and driven by Marion Cooper of Louisville. Ky., ran the fastest heat today in the second session of the Madison Powerboat Regatta.
Hornet’s speed in winning the Division One class 225 championship was 65.866 miles an hour. Hornet also won the Governor’s Cup race at reduced speed after the two bigger entries went out with mechanical trouble.
Other winners:
48 cubic inch — Ugh, Don Smith, Cincinnati, O., 48.728 mph
135 cubic inch — Marge II, Oscar Vermillion, Dayton, O., 60.7 mph
Division Two class 225 — Rig-A-Mortis, Max Weitering, Dayton, Ky., 59.96 mph

Speedboat Record By Hoosier Driver Is Not Official
Madison — (AP) — Ronnie Gray of Hagerstown bettered a world record in the Madison Powerboat Regatta, but his mark won’t count because the race wasn’t sanctioned by the American Powerboat Association.
Gray won the class AU event Saturday, his best heat being 35.5 miles an hour. The record is 34.213.
Mike Lemon of Anderson won Class DU and the free-for-all runabout class.
The best heat of the two-day meet was 65.866 miles an hour by Hornet, owned and driven by Marion Cooper of Louisville, Ky., in Division One Class 225 yesterday. Cooper’s boat also won the Governor’s Cup when the two bigger entries went out with mechanical trouble.
