Such Crust V Finishes 1st For Gold Cup
New Martinsville, W.Va. — (AP) — Bill Cantrell of Louisville, Ky„ famed as an auto racer at the Indianapolis Speedway, won the Gold Cup at the New Martinsville speed boat regatta Sunday.
Cantrell piloted Such Crust V to win both heats of the Imperial Gold Cup, running at an average speed of 89.048 miles per hour — a slow time forced by poor running conditions.
Second place went to Gale II, owned by Joseph Schoenith of Detroit and driven by his son, Lee. Third postion went to Miss Wayne, driven by Frank H. J. Saile, Jr., also of Detroit. They were the only boats to finish.
Burnett G. Bartley Jr., of Pittsburgh drove his Wildcatter to a world record of 77.453 miles per hour in the seven litre class.
Sherman Critchfield of St. Petersburg captured first place for Class D racing runabout by driving Hell's Angel at 59.761 mph and F. C. Moor of Miami look top honors in 48-cubic-inch hydroplane competition with 53.768 mph in Southern Air IV.

Cantrell Wins Both Heats Of Gold Cup
New Martinsville, W. Va, Sept 27 (AP) —Bill Cantrell of Louisville, Ky, onetime automobile racer at the Indianapolis Speedway, won the Gold Cup at the New Martinsville Speed Boat Regatta today.
Cantrell piloted Such Crust V to win both heats of the Imperial Gold Cup, running at an average speed of 89.048 miles per hour — a slow time forced by poor running conditions.
A persistent jinx returned to beset the favorite again as Slo-Mo Shun V, sister ship of the world’s fastest speedboat, threw an oil filter and failed to complete even the first lap of the championship heat.
Cantrell drove Such Crust V, owned bji Jack Schafer of Detroit, through the traps for an average speed of 93.756 miles per hour in the first heat and an average of 87.340 in the second.
Each heat consisted of four laps around a three-mile course. Such Crust V ran the 12 miles in 8:14.6.

Slo-Mo-Shun V threw an oil filter and failed to complete the first lap of the championship heat.
