SEATTLE, Aug. 4. (AP) The speedy Gale V from Detroit became today the second boat to qualify for Saturday’s, blue ribbon Gold Cup race here.
The Joe Schoenith-owned speedboat, driven by Lee Schoenith, qualified easily with a 99.9-mile-an-hour average for three times around the 3¾
-mile Lake Washington course. Only an 80-mile average Is required to qualify.
The Gale's time, however, was considerably slower than the record 111-mile qualifying average of the Seattle-owned Slo-Mo-Shun V last Monday.
Schoenith kept a light foot on the throttle as Gale V roared around the three laps at speeds of 100 plus, 100 flat and 99 plus.
The Gale V was the winner of the 1954 Maple Leaf and Detroit Memorial regattas In waters close to home.
