10 boats were allowed to start the first heat with disastrous consequences. My Sweetie, a small boat, went out of control and collided with Tempo VII locking sponsons with the Guy Lombardo entry and throwing her driver John Ban out. The driverless Sweetie next headed for Miss Cadillac that swerved to avoid the U-3, but collided with the Miss Supertest II. As a result three boats were put out of the race before the first turn. 10 boats had started on the Detroit River in 1949, but they were not Ted Jones style boats complete with rooster-tail. In 1956 in the Silver Cup a ten boat field was split into sections.
