Gale V Is New Hydroplane Champion

MADISON, Ind. — Detroiter Joseph Schoenith's Gale V is the new national champion hydroplane although it lost Sunday in close heats to Guy Lombardo's Tempo VII in the 8th annual Madison Regatta.

Finishes in the two final heats were the closest in Gold Cup class history.

Tempo VII, driven by Danny Foster of Detroit, won by three feet in the first 15-mile heat on the three-mile Ohio River course, with Bill Cantrell of Detroit driving the loser. Lee Schoenith, son of the Gale V owner, drove in the second beat and Foster beat him by one length.

The Madison Courier estimated 50,000 persons jammed the Indiana and Kentucky banks for the Sunday’s windup events of the two-day regatta.

By picking up 900 points for second place, Gale V finished the season with 2,050 to Tempo VII's 1,727, which included 1,200 Sunday. The Lombardo boat cracked the Madison Course record with a 105.5 mile-an-hour run during an elimination run Saturday. In Sunday’s race. Tempo VII was clocked at 86.8 for the first lap and 88.6 in the second.
