Miss U.S. II was in the pits and fortunately Shanty I was not. If the U.S. II could have scored some substantial points she would have closed the gap significantly between herself and Shanty - she was down 325 points. Thus she could have gone into the final race at Las Vegas with a real chance at the Championship. Miss U.S. II was a very competitive boat on smooth water, but only an average boat when the going got rough. U.S.II could not be repaired from her sponson damage at Washington so her sister Miss U.S. I went to Las Vegas instead.
Miss U.S. I probably did a lap of 106 m.p.h. at Madison. This was a little better than she was able to manage in 1955 and commensurate with the lap she turned at Las Vegas. Nevertheless it is hard to imagine her turning a lap 17 m.p.h. faster than her heat speed especially given the level of competition.
