Madison Regatta Trial Runs Set

Madison, Ind. (AP)—Nine of the nation's leadying hydroplanes, topped by front-running Hawaii Kai III, will start trial runs on the Ohio River tomorrow for this weekend’s Governor’s Trophy race.

The field against Miss U.S. II, 1956 winner, also includes Miss Wahoo, running second in season racing, and Thriftway, twice Gold Cup winner. Hawaii Kai leads in season points with Silver Cup and Presidents Cup winnings.

Other unlimited hydroplanes entered for the big event in the sixth annual Madison Regatta are Breathless II, Ricochet, What-A-Pickle, Wildroot Charlie and Bill-Der.

Elimination heats for the unlimiteds will be run Saturday along with outboard competition. Finals will come Sunday, with the big trophy to be presented by Terry Townsend, Anderson, winner of the recent national Soap Box Derby in Akron, O.

Hydroplanes In Madison Event

Madison, Ind. — Five of the nation's leading unlimited hydroplanes. the Hawaii Kai III, Breathless II, Miss U. S. II, Richochet, What-A-Pickle and the Canadian Supertest have'filed entries for the Madison Regatta to be held Saturday and Sunday on the Ohio River here.

. Race officials.here say that the tight point station resulting from the President's Cup competition at Washington D. C., last weekend, indicates that Miss Thriftway, Miss Wahoo, Wildroot Charlie and Miss Wayne must enter in order to better their national point standing.

All the unlimiteds will arrive here early this week and trial runs will start on Thursday and continue thru Friday.

Saturday's opener will be loaded with action as elimination heats for the unlimiteds will be held. The present field indicates at least three 15 mile elimination heats over the three mile course on that day. Also scheduled for Saturday are "alky" outboard competitions for classes ABCF.

The finale on Sunday will open with the unlimited inboards in action. Classes 48-136-135-225-266 and 7 litre will compete for points, cash and trophies.

Hydroplanes To Race Sunday In Madison Regatta

Madison, Ind. (AP) — Unlimited hydroplanes, big airplane engines encased in just enough boat to keep them afloat, slashed the Ohio River in trial runs today for the Governor’s Cup race Sunday.

Arrival of 10 of the Gold Cup class boats and possible entry of two or three more assured the biggest field since the Madison Regatta joined the circuit three years ago.

Two elimination heats Saturday and two more Sunday will cut the entries to five starters in the finals. The second weekend of the regatta also will include races for inboard hydros and racing outboard hydros.

Three Seattle boats are one-two-three in national unlimited hydro standings with only the race here and one at Lake Mead remaining this season. All three are entered this weekend.

Hawaii Kai III, winner of the Presidents Cup and the Silver Cup, has been piloted to a 1,594 point total by Jack Regas. Miss Thriftway, driven by Bill Muncey, has 1,225 points and Miss Wahoo, driven by Mira Slovak, has 1,225.

The field also includes Miss U.S. II, the winner here last year.

A victory Sunday will be worth 400 points. Second, place will bring 225, third 169 and fourth 127.

Top Hydros Are Entered At Madison

Madison, Ind., Sept, 26. — A field of 11 of the nation’s fastest hydroplanes is assured for Sunday's Madison Regatta on the Ohio River here.

Spurred by the tightening-up of national point standings resulting from last week's President's Cup event at Washington, D. C., owners of the big boats will be going all out for victory to boost their national ratings.

Among those entered are Miss U. S. 1, Hawaii Kai III, Miss Wahoo, Miss Supertest II, Breathless, What-A-Pickle, Miss Thriftway. Wildroot Charlie and Bill-Der.

Qualifying heats will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday. Finals will be run beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Hydros to Run This Weekend

Madison, Ind. — Hawaii Kai III will attempt to add to its lead in the race for national hydroplane honors this weekend in the annual Governor's Cup regatta on the Ohio River.

The Kai’s chief opposition is expected to come from Miss Thriftway and Miss Wahoo. Other entries in the regatta are Wildroot Charlie. Ricochet. What A Pickle, Miss Supertest II, Breathless II, Miss U.S. 1 and Bill-Der.

Heats 1A and 1B will be run Saturday, while heats 2A, 2B and the final will be run Sunday.

Radio KING will air the regatta, and broadcast times are as follows: Saturday — Heat 1A. 1:30 p.m.: Heat 1B, 2:30 p.m. Sunday — Heat 2A, 11 a.m.; Heat 2B, 11:45 a.m.; final. 2 p.m.
