1978 Squire Seafair Trophy
Muncey Sets Record
By Craig Smith Times Staff Reporter
Bill Muncey drove the Atlas Van Lines to a 2-mile course record in qualifying for the Seafair Trophy unlimited-hydroplane race today on Lake Washington.
Muncey averaged 125.000 miles an hour, breaking the mark he set last year of 122.033.
Muncey became the second qualifier of the day. Ron Snyder qualified Miss Budweiser for Sunday’s Seafair race at 110.429 m.p.h. earlier this morning.
This is the second year of a two-mile course for the race. The only other boat on the water this morning was the Squire Shop’s U-65, driven by Chip Hanauer. The boat went dead and had to be towed back to the Stan Sayres pits.
