1986 Budweiser Unlimited Hydroplane Championship
Hydroplane race set for today at Key Biscayne
Key Biscayne - The 16th annual Budweiser Unlimited Hydroplane Championship will begin today on Key Biscayne at the Miami Marine Stadium. The event, which will last through Sunday, is expecting its largest fleet ever.
Miami, the traditional opening race of the unlimited national circuit, usually has the smallest number of boats. But this year to qualify for the circuit’s most prestigious race, the Gold Cup in Detroit, a racer must qualify in one previous event. The Gold Cup follows the Miami race.
There will be three turbine powered hydroplanes competing in Miami, including Miss Budweiser, Miller American and Miss 7-Eleven. The 1⅔-mile course, short by hydroplane standards, favors boats that accelerate quickly.
