Madison Regatta still on

MADISON, Ind. — Despite lower than usual levels on the Ohio River because of the prolonged drought, it's full speed ahead this weekend for the Madison Regatta for unlimited hydroplanes.

"The Madison Regatta still is on," Dan Carter, race chairman, said Thursday. "Low water here is no problem. In fact, the river is ideal for racing."

Thirteen boats are expected to participate in two days of qualifying heats that begin Friday at 10 a.m. for Sunday's Indiana Governor's Cup race.

Six preliminary heats of three laps each will be scored to determine which five boats will compete in the $121,000 Governor's Cup.

Carter said a preliminary survey of the river course Thursday showed the local river stage at 17 feet, which the pool stage was 16.8 feet.
