RACE NOTES
FRIDAY: Weather was mild and pleasant. Seven boats were in the pits: U-1, U-5, U-9, U-11, U-21, U-27 & U-99.9. Testing and qualifying were uneventful except U-27 broke the steering cable in turn 2, spinning the boat. Andrew Tate's first Unlimited race - he took qualifying laps and qualified second fastest but scored no points due to being unqualified driver. U-99.9 did not qualify on speed - took commissioner’s option.
SATURDAY: U-21 & U-27 qualified in Saturday testing but received no points. U-7 arrived late, but was not complete. In heat racing, Jimmy Shane won Heat 1A and J. Michael Kelly won Heat 1B. Cal Phipps gave chase to Jimmy Shane for the entire heat, but Shane cruised to victory in Heat 1A, with Phipps second and Kevin Eacret in the U-99.9 third. Heat 1b saw Thompson hook in turn two on the final lap, allowing Brian Perkins to take second place, with the U-11 third in 1b. Andrew Tate needed to complete two heats starting in the second row, and he finished his first one in fourth place.
SUNDAY: Sunday's weather meant the schedule was going to be flexible, as there was a storm due to hit late in the day. Cal Phipps won Heat 2A from Brian Perkins in second, while Jimmy Shane took Heat 2B from JMK in second. Heat 3A went to Shane while 3B went to Phipps. This set up the eventful Final Heat: J. Michael Kelly barely snuck into Lane 1 on the backstretch, pushing Shane into lane 2 for the start. Shane was a little late to the start and Kelly came out of Turn 1 in the lead. In turn 2, Shane pinched Kelly tight, forcing Kelly to skip out, running into Shane's skidfin water and shredding the right tail fairing. Shane then took the lead with Phipps trailing. On Lap 3, JMK almost went over on the backstretch, and on Lap 5, Phipps got extremely light out of turn 1, but settled it down before blowing over the U-27 just before the bridge, folding the right sponson up almost vertical on landing. This stopped the heat, with Shane declared the winner. U-27 sustained major damage to sponson and spar.
