RACE NOTES FRIDAY: Jimmy Shane grabbed the top qualifying spot over Andrew Tate by barely more than 1/2 MPH. J. Michael Kelly was third and JW Myers qualified fourth after Brian Perkins was DSQ'd due to technical infractions. The U-11, U-440 and U-99.9 did not qualify on Friday. SATURDAY: Tom Thompson qualified the U-11 in morning practice. HEAT 1A: J. Michael Kelly in the U-12 Graham Trucking barely edged out Tom Thompson for the win after being slowed after hitting a huge hole in turn 2 on the last lap. Brian Perkins in the U-21 Albert Lee Appliance was third and Dustin Echols finished his first Unlimited heat in the U-440 Bucket List Racing entry HEAT 1B: Andrew Tate in the U-9 Les Schwab Tires grabbed an easy win after leader Jimmy Shane in the U-1 Miss Homstreet was penalized 1 minute for an 80 MPH violation. Shane finished fourth. Greg Hopp's U-99.9 Miss Rock/CARSTAR was second followed by JW Myers in his first heat after five years away from HI. SUNDAY: HEAT 3A: Tom Thompson was very early and jumped the start, leaving Jimmy Shane with a commanding win over Brian Perkins, Greg Hopp and Thompson, in that order. HEAT 3B: J. Michael Kelly continued his perfect streak with a commanding win. Andrew Tate and JW Myers battled for 2+ laps before Tate pulled away for second. Dustin Echols trailed in fourth, almost a lap adrift. FINAL HEAT: Unfortunately for Andrew Tate, the race was over before it began - he earned a one-minute penalty for dislodging a buoy during the milling period, but gave Jimmy Shane the race of his life by tracking him down from almost a roostertail behind to take the lead at the checkered flag. The penalty relegated him to seventh place. Shane won the 2017 ALbert Lee Cup due to Tate's penalty. J. Michael Kelly followed in second place and Brian Perkins grabbed an emotional podium finish after a week-long thrash by the crew to repair the extensive damage suffered in Tri-Cities the week before. Tom Thompson was fourth, followed by JW Myers and Greg Hopp. The series heads to Detroit with only nine points separating the top two boats! |
