RACE NOTES

FRIDAY: Jimmy Shane topped qualifying over Andrew Tate, J. Michael Kelly and Tom Thompson. Dustin Echols did not qualify. Due to the shortage of entries, all boats were scheduled to contest all heats during the weekend, and the program was shortened to a total of four heats.

HEAT 1A: Andrew Tate's U-9 Delta RealTrac made up 100 points on Jimmy Shane and U-1 Miss Homestreet's National Points lead with a win in the opener. Tom Thompson's U-11 Reliable Diamond Tool/J&D's Hydraulic gathered third place points and Dustin Echols' U-440 Bucket List entry finished fourth. The U-12 Graham Trucking of J. Michael Kelly had more than two N2 violations, earning him a DSQ.

HEAT 1B: Shane came back strong with a win from the inside lane over Tate, with Kelly and Thompson battling deck to deck for third place. Kelly grabbed third and Thompson was fourth. Echols trailed a lap behind.

HEAT 2A: Andrew Tate made the mistake that sunk his National Points chase when he drove INSIDE the buoy marker designating the DMZ area, earning him a DSQ and handing the race win to Shane, who clinched the National High Points win for the fifth year in a row, and earning the U-1 number for sponsor Homestreet Bank for the second year in a row and the Miss Madison team for the fourth year in a row. Kelly finished second, Thompson was third and Echols fourth.

HEAT 2B: Tate came back strong with a commanding win over Shane, with Kelly trailing in third place. Thompson once again was fourth and Echols once more was fifth.

FINAL HEAT: Andrew Tate took the 2017 Homestreet Bank San Diego Bayfair top trophy after a thrilling 5 lap battle with J. Michael Kelly. Kelly lined up in lane 1, Tate in lane 2, Shane in lane 3 and Thompson in lane 4 at the start. Echols was outside. Kelly took the lead at the start, but Tate passed him after the first lap, eventually pulling out almost a roostertail lead by lap three before Kelly clawed back to within a half roostertail at the finish. Shane trailed by 1/4 lap at the finish, and Thompson was 1/3 of a lap back. Echols was running, but a lap down.
