RACE NOTES
FRIDAY: Qualifying was cut short after a massive rainstorm hit the lake in the afternoon. The U-7 Spirit of Detroit was first out, with Bert Henderson logging a 149.385 MPH tops speed. Dustin Echols was next out in the U-440 Bucket List Racing entry, with an impressive 145. 723 MPH lap. J. Michael Kelly topped the session with a 154.506 MPH lap to lead first day qualifiers.
SATURDAY: The second qualifying session got underway with the U-11 J&D's presented by Reliable Diamond Tool of Tom Thompson first off the beach, notching a very impressive 156.983 MPH top speed. Jimmy Shane in the U-6 Miss HomeStreet was up next, posting the fastest speed of the weekend - 164.422 MPH, breaking the qualifying record set by Andrew Tate in 2018. Dustin Echols took another shot and ran the fastest laps the U-440 has ever run: 150.082 MPH. Corey Peabody began his second season as a driver in HI Unlimited by posting a 139.790 MPH top speed. Kelly then upped his speed to 154.506 MPH a to set the field.
Heat 1A: Jimmy Shane in lane 2 and J. Michael Kelly in lane 1 battled for three laps, with Shane coming out on top, followed by Thompson and Echols.
Heat 1B: JMK edged out Bert Henderson with Echols and Kelly's team mate Peabody following in 3rd and 4th respectively.
Heat 2A: Shane in the U-6 and Henderson in the U-7 had a great deck-to-deck battle, with Shane pulling away going into the third lap for the win. Peabody in the U-98 finished third, while Thompson's U-11 went dead in the water before the start with high EGT temperature.
Heat 2B: J. Michael Kelly and Dustin Echols collided prior to the start, with both boats sustaining minor damage. Both Kelly and Jimmy Shane jumped the gun leaving the race win to Tom Thompson, with 2nd place going to Echols.
Heat 3A: Henderson grabbed a huge lead at the start, but JMK tracked him down for the win, with Echols in 3rd and Peabody in 4th.
Heat 3B: Shane continued his domination, with an impressive come from behind win over from Henderson, Thompson and Peabody.
Final Heat: Jimmy Shane grabbed the Southern Cup with a dominant wire to wire win over Kelly, Henderson, Echols and Peabody. Shane's win was the first for the new-in-2018 U-6 Miss Homestreet hull.
