FRIDAY: It's the middle of September and that means the Unlimiteds are in the pit area of the Bill Muncey Memorial course on Mission Bay in San Diego, California. A warm but breezy weekend was in store as the fleet of 6 boats were ready to test. For the first time this season, nature was not going to interfere with Friday testing and qualifying. After running in the morning and afternoon test sessions, Kelly Stocklin driving his U-440 this week had to withdraw for the weekend due to continuing gearbox issues plaguing the smaller of the two orange boats. The remaining 5 boats all hit the water and put on a show through qualifying as Jimmy Shane's 163.342 MPH lap in the U-1 Miss HomeStreet stood as our top time. Dave Villwock showed that the newer of the two Bucket List entries continued to make progress as they qualified 2nd with a speed of 159.724 MPH. J. Michael Kelly would qualify in 3rd with the U-8 at 155.461MPH followed by Corey Peabody (U-9) and Jamie Nilsen (U-11) rounding out the field. JMK was seen in the pits wearing a sling for his right shoulder as he broke his collar bone in the last month. After doctor's clearance and passing physicals he made the decision to fight for his 2021 Driver's Championship as he entered the weekend with a 210 point lead. His backup, Kip Brown would remain close with spotting duties for the weekend.
SATURDAY: Heat 1A was a three boat heat pitting the HomeStreet, Pinnacle Peak Consulting and Beacon Plumbing against each other. Corey Peabody started on the outside with a burst of speed and excitement but jumped the start gun leaving Shane and Villwock to duel for the lead. Shane would come away with the victory and 400 more points closing in on JMK's lead and extending the gap for the U-1 stay on the Miss Madison hull in 2022.Villwock and the 40 would finish 2nd, followed by Peabody in the 9. Heat 1B would feature our remaining two boats and was setting up to potentially be the best 2-boat showdown for the weekend. Nilsen in the U-11 J&JDs led across the line with JMK in the U-8 Miss Tri-Cities following closely behind. From the shoreline, everyone saw the U-8 fly around the U-11 like it was standing still but if you saw the onboard footage from the U-11, you know that it was not that story anyone wanted to see. A thrown prop and explosion of the hot section of it's T-55 turbine led to the U-11 coming to a stop and the U-8 was able to walk its way with the win. The U-11 was towed back with minor structural damage and would try to put a new motor and prop together for the next round of heats. Kelly's victory gave him 400 more points and his 180 point lead back that he started with on Saturday.Heat 2A had the Strong Racing boats racing side-by-side as the U-11 was continuing to thrash away at the Heat 1B damage. Kelly took the inside lane and used it to his advantage to pull away from his friend and teammate Corey Peabody. Dan-ell Strong had to be happy to see his boats put on a show for the crowd as JMK gained another 400 points to extend his lead to 580 and wait to see what Havre-de-Grace's Jimmy Shane would do in Heat 2B. The U-8 taking that victory would also keep the boat championship alive for one more heat as Shane only needed 351 points to clinch another championship for the HomeStreet Miss Madison team. Heat 2B would prove to be the most cerebral heat of the weekend as it was the battle of two 5-time Gold Cup champions. Being both masters of the milling mind-games, Shane and Villwock left the pits together and really put on a show for the fans along the shoreline. Villwock looked to take lane one away but the referees determined the U-40 Beacon Plumbing did not have the needed overlap on the salty waters of Mission Bay for it to be a legal maneuver. Shane and Villwock did not let the penalty diminish their milling strategy as they both snookered each other into jumping the start gun. Shane would fly the blue and white HomeStreet to another 400 points and clinch the 2021 National High Points Championship and bring home the U-1 for another year to the citizens of Madison, Indiana.
SUNDAY: With another 400 points on the line and a gap of 180 splitting JMK and Shane, Heat 3A would potentially be the biggest preliminary heat of the season. After a clean start, Jimmy Shane and the U-1 HomeStreet led J. Michael Kelly's U-8 Miss Tri-Cities into turn 1 and would not look back. Shane knew with a victory in 3A he could make up 100 points on Kelly and would set-up huge stakes for our final-Final Heat of the 2021 season with an 80 point gap. And when they crossed the finish line, 80 points was the gap as the U-1 and U-8 finished 1st and 2nd while the U-9 Pinnacle Peak Consulting would get a disqualification for a DMZ violation during the mill. Our final preliminary heat of the year would be Dave Villwock in the U-40 and Jamie Nilsen in the U-11. Teams from around the pit area offered help to the J&Ds team as they looked to get the boat back up and running following Saturday's damage from 1B. Villwock pulled away from the pits while Nilsen struggled to get the fire lit under the U-11. Brad Luce and K-Dub Brewer encouraged the crowd to stand on their feet and cheer to help will the U-11 back to life. As the roar of the shoreline made its way onto the water, Nilsen got the engine to turn over and up on plane. Unfortunately that would be short lived as the U-11 would come to a stop near the Start/Finish line and Nilsen would watch by the beach of Fiesta Island as Villwock would parade Heat 3B as a private 3 lap test session.
FINAL: The wind calmed down and the 4 boats that answered the call for the Final all left together from the pits. Shane was looking to steal the points lead away from Kelly with a victory. Kelly was looking to secure his first Driver's points title in his 18 year career. Peabody was ready for back-to-back final victories and the 2nd of his career while Villwock was looking for the Bucket List's first team victory. As they came to the line, Peabody on the outside and Shane in lane 2 would lead them across the line but after a review, both would be called for jumping the start gun. As Shane's fast U-1 hull came around to complete lap 5, that penalty was confirmed as they hung the white flag for him and prepped the checkered flag for the hard charging U-40 Beacon Plumbing with JMK following in 2nd. Following technical inspection, the computer read out of the U-40's black box read that during the milling period, the boat had gone under 80 MPH and violated Starting rule 5(a)(ii) - Section A for "Failure to maintain the Minimum Speed for more than 5 continuous seconds; the U-40's violation time came back at 5.05 seconds. With this change, the U-8 Miss Tri-Cities bookended the season with their 2nd victory and clinched the 1st Driver's High Points title for veteran J. Michael Kelly. Though it was an abbreviated season, 2021 brought back a limited fleet for the Unlimiteds; 2022 is just around the corner and is looking to be even better. See you all when we get there!
