2022 HomeStreet Bank Bill Muncey Cup

Jimmy Shane wins every heat and the national title in San Diego
SAN DIEGO — Jimmy Shane piloted the Miss HomeStreet to victory in every heat this weekend at the HomeStreet Bank Bayfair event in San Diego and in the process won the Bill Muncey Cup and national championships for both himself and his race team. The event was the season’s final stop of the 2022 H1 Unlimited Racing Series, which features the world’s fastest boats.
Shane, 36, of San Antonio, Texas, was the event’s fastest qualifier, won all three heats of competition today, and the Saturday Showdown event held yesterday.
The winner-take-all final heat featured close competition between Shane, J. Michael Kelly in Miss Tri-Cities, and Jeff Bernard in Miss Goodman Real Estate. Kelly and Bernard grabbed the lead at the start, then Shane caught up with the leaders toward the end of the first lap. He pulled ahead and completed the heat with an average speed of 155.010 mph. Kelly finished close behind with an average speed of just over 152 mph and Bernard was third at over 150 mph. Finishing fourth was Jamie Nilsen in .
In the day’s first heat, Shane finished behind Kelly at the start but came from behind, battled Miss Tri-Cities through most of the race, and was first across the finish line. His victory in that heat clinched the national championship for the Miss HomeStreet team, their 11th title in the past 14 seasons.
Shane clinched the national driver’s title on Saturday—his seventh in the past nine seasons. His seven titles place him second on the list of champion H1 Unlimited drivers of all time, tied with Bill Muncey and Chip Hanauer.
Shane also won the second preliminary heat. He was side-by-side with Bernard through the first lap then pulled away to a comfortable advantage over the others. Jamie Nilsen eventually finished second and Kelly was third.
San Diego’s HomeStreet Bank Bayfair race concludes a 2022 H1 Unlimited Racing Series season that featured excellent racing action at five stops in Alabama, Indiana, Washington, and California. The race teams will now head home for the winter and will start preparing the world’s fastest boats for the 2023 campaign.
